The Importance of Sun Protection
As the sunny summer days approach, it’s crucial we think about sun protection. Exposure to UV rays can lead to sunburn, skin damage, and increased skin cancer risk over time. But with the right sunscreens and some simple precautions, we can enjoy time outside safely.
Choosing an Effective Sunscreen
The most important thing to look for is a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of at least 30. SPF refers to the amount of UVB protection a sunscreen provides from burning rays. Higher SPF values indicate more protection. It’s also vital to choose a broad spectrum formula that shields from both UVA and UVB radiation.
Application Tips
No matter how high the SPF, proper application is key. Apply sunscreen generously 15-30 minutes before sun exposure and reapply every two hours or after swimming/sweating. Pay extra attention to oft-missed spots like ears, around eyes, back of neck and shoulders.
FAQ
What is the difference between chemical and mineral sunscreens?
Chemical sunscreens contain active ingredients like oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate and homosalate that absorb UV rays before they damage skin. Mineral sunscreens use zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide to physically block rays.
How much sunscreen should I apply?
As a general rule, you’ll want to apply about 1 ounce of sunscreen (enough to fill a shot glass) to cover your entire body. Reapply the same amount every 2 hours.
Do I need sunscreen on cloudy days?
Yes! Clouds filter only a portion of UV rays, so your skin still needs protection even when sunny skies are hidden.
Can I use last year’s sunscreen?
Sunscreen effectiveness can begin to decline after 1-2 years. Check expiration dates and consider replacing bottles every season for maximum protection.
Should I apply sunscreen under or over my moisturizer?
Apply sunscreen last, on top of your moisturizer, for optimal absorption and performance. The ingredients will penetrate best when layered onto bare skin.
