Working out each week is an act of self-care that helps me stay healthy in body and mind. More than counting reps or obsessing over calories, I’ve learned to approach fitness as an opportunity to better understand and appreciate my body.
Morning Walks and Stretches
I like to start my day with some fresh air and gentle movement. Each morning, I take my dog Lulu on a brisk 20 minute walk around the neighborhood. We both enjoy this quiet time before the busyness of the day sets in. When we return, I do some simple stretches – reaching for the sky, bending side to side, and touching my toes. These activities get my blood flowing and help me feel more awake and energized.
Afternoon Yoga Sessions
On days when I’m not going to an exercise class, I set aside 30-45 minutes in the late afternoon for a home yoga practice. I have a few go-to sequences that include standing and seated postures, backbends and forward folds. Yoga helps me build strength and flexibility while fully engaging my mind-body connection through the breath. I always finish my practice with savasana, allowing my entire body to relax and recharge.
Evening Bike Rides
If I still need some stress relief at the end of the day, I hop on my bike and do a quick ride around the neighborhood as the sun sets. Pedaling as I take in the pink and orange hues filling the sky brings me a sense of peace and contentment. These short evening rides are the perfect way for me to let go of any worries from the day.
